A New Dice Masters First in Secret Wars – Four Character Faces

Marvel Dice Masters - Secret Wars - Franklin's Galactus No Mercy

With the new Marvel Dice Masters Secret Wars set release announcement there was a glimpse of another first for Dice Masters. Did you spot it in the promo piccies? If you didn’t – it’s a character with 4 character faces on their dice!

Meet Franklin’s Galactus everybody!

Look at that! There they are – four full faces of character rolling opportunity!

Who’s Franklin’s Galactus in Secret Wars?

It’s significant that we’re seeing the cosmically epic Galactus as the first character in Dice Masters with this new feature. BUT, this is a Galactus with a twist.

To understand Franklin’s Galactus you need to understand both Franklin’s power AND the Secret Wars storyline.

This is the Dice Masters set based on the 2015 Secret Wars storyline. It’s a dense and complex Marvel Comics event which draws heavily from all sorts of aspects of the Marvel Multiverse continuities.

In the story: Dr Doom has saved reality by using the power of the Beyonders to combine several realities to create the Battleworld. It’s a patchwork realm made up of different multiverse elements from across Marvel Comics history. Dr Doom rules over the Battleworld, with his family of Susan, Valeria and Franklin Von Doom. He has, essentially, stolen Reed Richards’ family. He installs himself as the “God Emperor Doom”, using the omnipotent power of the Beyonders to rule with an iron fist. The memories of it’s inhabitants (with a few exceptions) have been manipulated to remember only the existence of his realm.

Franklin is incredibly powerful. Possibly one of THE most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe. He can manipulate reality, significantly altering it to the point that, in a core universe storyline, Franklin was able to resurrect a defeated Galactus to be HIS herald! In the Battleworld context of the Secret Wars; Franklin has used his powers to control Galactus and make him, to all intents and purposes, a subservient guard-dog for the Emperor Doom palace in which they all live.

And this is why, as this is the Secret Wars Dice Masters set, we’ve got “Franklin’s Galactus”.

Four Character Faces Implications

The most immediate implication is that your chances of rolling a character are higher. Yep – I’m going that obvious. I can’t say I’m much of an odds guy, but I know that more character faces means its more likely to roll a character LOL ;).

It’s a rudimentary implication, but minimising the random elements of the game is a big aspect to winning games. When you pull Franklin’s Galactus out of your bag the odds of you putting a character in the field is higher than any other dice in the game. Potentially a big character.

And, let’s not forget when your opponent makes you re-roll. Any Storm or Gambit shennanigans are going to be potentially less impactful. Franklin’s Galactus brings a higher probability of surviving that kind of re-roll chaos and keeping a blocker ready to go.

An extra character level also has implications for the act of spinning dice. When I first saw this card my head went straight to “what a handy character to have on an Awaken team.”. I’m thinking of the benefits he could bring as an Energy Field global counter weight to a Nebula or Atom. He’s got a bit more room for spinning.

He’s clearly going to be able to withstand activity by your opponent to spin your stuff down. The popular Black Widow – Widow’s Hunt Energize removal is going to have to work harder to clear a Franklin’s Galactus. (Not that Energize actually works anyway)

Does That Mean There’s a Level 4?

That does seem be the case, and it’s an interesting development for Dice Masters for sure. There’s not a great many characters across the IPs that would qualify for four character faces so I just think its a fun thing to play around with. We’ll likely only see it occasionally and will possibly only have niche impact. But on the casual fun angle who’s not going to give getting a massive level 4 Galactus in the field?

I’m certain that there’s some further investigation to do yet for the joys this idea can bring. One thing I will be doing is taking a good deep dive into game texts that use a character’s level somehow.

For example; my man Stu.ART suggested to me that having a level 4 in the mix brings a new light to cards like Crowd Fighting. I’m certain there’s some combo-tastic fun tucked away in the card pool going unnoticed that might get new life with a fourth level in the mix. I was also reminded of a Golden Basic Action I toyed around with in the past too: Possession.

There’s bound to be lots more so let me know in the comments below of any cards you can think of that might open some fun doors to use that Level 4. Let’s get some interesting suggestions going.

I wonder if the other rarities of Franklin’s Galactus does more with this? I can’t wait to see the texts on his other cards…
