A new Dark Phoenix Saga OP Kit was revealed today on a live stream on DMArmada’s YouTube channel. You can see the live stream here (go watch those handsome gents!):
It’s an especially exciting piece of news. It indicates some strong momentum for Dice Masters going into 2022 and a solid commitment to encouraging in store play.
It was a massive reveal too – the largest in store Organised Play Kit for Dice Masters to date. Traditionally these kits come with 3 cards included, but this set comes with a whopping 14 cards! If that doesn’t excite, I don’t know what will!
Let’s take a closer look…
Dark Phoenix Saga OP Kit Cards
Let’s begin by showing off the cards…
Power Bolt
First reveal was an alt art Power Bolt basic action card.
This is a reprint of a classic Dice Masters card, marking it’s 4th appearance in the game. It was great to see it’s making an appearance in the Dark Phoenix Saga set, and even greater now that we’re getting this super-sweet alt art card.
This one is going to really stand out on the table. Gotta love some Joe Jusko Marvel Masterpiece painted artwork.
Mutant Armor
Next up we had “Mutant Armor”…
This one is intriguing. It’s a unique card, but shares the game-text with another Dark Phoenix Saga Basic Action called “Organic Steel”. (Which, incidentally, hasn’t been seen to date). So you’ve basically got the option to use it twice on your team!
For those struggling with the pink, it costs 3 and the game-text reads:
Continuous: Prevent up to 2 damage to target character die and move this die to your Used Pile. If you have an active X-Men character, also gain 1 life.”
This card has table presence. The colour scheme really stands out and catches your eye. I love it!
Magneto – All Rarities
Moving on, the gents revealed not one, not two, not three, BUT FOUR Magneto reveals!
That’s right folks – this Organised Play kit is going to include ALL rarities of the Magneto character from Dark Phoenix Saga.
That’s significant. And Awesome. Magneto is a great character that has lots of team building options around him so it really opens the character up for those not getting the higher rarities in the blind product chase.
The artwork made me all nostalgic too. I feel like they’ve got a retro mid-90s Fleer Ultra trading card vibe that sent me right back to my childhood. They are, I’m sure you’ll agree, VERY good looking cards.
Kitty Pryde – All Rarities
…but it didn’t stop there. The kit also has ALL the rarities of the Kitty Pryde cards from the Dark Phoenix Saga too!
Once again – this meant that we were seeing some Kitty Pryde cards for the very first time as the main set version hasn’t been revealed yet either. Stephen/Jimmy – what a stream!
this is killer artwork – I’m just blown away by it. these are going to look stunning on the table.
Hellfire Gala Basic Action – 2 Art Options
And yet still it wasn’t over. We got another Basic Action reveal next – Hellfire Gala – with two art options.
I’m going to call it as I see it: this is the jewel of the set for me. When we interviewed Jimmy on the podcast a few month’s back he teased that they had been developing alternative Dice Masters win cons and here is the first of those.
Again – for clarity – it’s a 6 cost Basic Action with the following game-text:
Roll 2 dice from your bag. Each player fields three Sidekick dice from their Used Pile. If there are 16 or more dice in the Field Zone, win the game.
Yep – you read that last line right – “win the game”.
I’ve got SO MUCH to say about this card I’ll be following up on this one for sure. Keep an eye out on our YouTube channel soon for some further True Mister Six commentary on this one!
One thing’s for sure – I’ll be using that Captain Britain option for sure!
Focus Basic Action
As if that wasn’t enough – Stephen & Jimmy kept going and showed us this outstanding alt art Focus Basic Action.
It’s a reprint from Infinity Gauntlet and it sure does look pretty. More remarkable Joe Jusko Marvel Masterpiece work. Chat comments were “this needs framing”.
It sure does…
Explosion Basic Action
As things started to wind down there was one last card to see… Explosion…
Another spoiler – not just from the Organised Play kit but from the main set again. We had seen this card, but the game-text was too unreadable to discern what it did.
It’s a 4 cost Basic Action and the card text is…
Deal 2 damage to each player character die. You may also spend any number of Bolt energy, for each that you do, you may deal 1 damage to target character die. Deal 1 additional damage to each player and character die that Explosion deals damage to.
Wow! Talk about burning it all down. It is called “Explosion”, I suppose. this is another one that I’ll need to be digesting some more – my gut instinct is to go away and read some “when KO’d” effects for my team to mitigate the wide area of effect it has over your own characters. And maybe life gain. Andy could put it on his Aquaman team…
“Broken Frame” Art Work
The artwork is just phenomenal on these. Jimmy described onstream how they’ve been calling it at Wizkids “Broken Frame” art work.
Game texts aside I’m really encouraged to see the fruits of Wizkids labour and bringing something extra special to the promo cards with the graphic design and artwork choices. It makes it feel like something really special.
When is The Dark Phoenix Saga OP Kit released
The Dark Phoenix Saga OP kit is listed for release in North America on the 23rd February 2022.
No word yet on specific availability in other territories. To quote an e-mail I got from Wizkids: “sometime soon after…”. With so much uncertainty in the world of supply chain right now I suspect they are not able to commit on worldwide just.
